I think there is a reason why humans evolved with a spiritual sensitivity: because there’s something really there. In the same way that eyes developed because there was light to detect (and focus), humans developed spiritual capabilities for the same reason. Not that humans got it right; we get it wrong far too much of the time. But there are ample indications that (independent of internal imaginings) there is a spiritual realm that encompasses humans, which we need to engage properly to be whole persons.
Although the Theophilus section herein explores this in a Christian context, I think there is a lot of universal human applicability contained in it. Taking a look at the Initial Thoughts article might be a good place to start.
